I was typing a pathname into an Edit window, hitting Esc to complete each component, when it dawned on me that I wasn't talking to the shell at all...

I've long believed that filename completion should exist everywhere. My fingers expect it constantly, but rarely is it there. I could certainly use it in vi or "smart" argument completion for man, vi and countless others. Unfortunately this isn't very practical.
