X applications would run under the NeXT Step environment if I read it correctly. The article pointed out that at this point they are talking it over and trying to figure out who should do what. But from what I know about X, there is nothing that says you have to render the images this way ( am I wrong ?? ). An xclient ask the X server to draw a line from point A to point B. How the X server 'draws' the line on the screen is of no concern to the xclient.
