The 3 hour figure is for a full system build of an optical disk, using BuildDisk. It takes only a few minutes to initialize a blank OD for data usage. Insert the OD, su and # disk -i /dev/rod0a Two partitions result, od0a and od0b that can then be mounted. Note that the NeXT mount allows you to specify a path that need not be pre-allocated - i. e., you can do # mount /dev/od0a /myODpartition without having to # mkdir /myODpartition Don't forget to umount and eject when you're done: # umount /myODpartition # disk -e /dev/rod0a >From: ali@polya.Stanford.EDU (Ali T. Initializing an optical for data use takes less than 10 minutes --- You just use "disk -i /dev/rod0a," and you get a disk with two empty partitions. What takes three hours is building an optical disk from a SCSI disk --- This includes the time to first initialize the disk then transfer all the data from the SCSI to the optical. You just run the included "BuildDisk" application to accomplish this. Along the same lines, it takes an hour to build a SCSI disk from an optical.
