I was wondering why this note was put at the end of the cl man page on the NeXT. "The online documentation and Common Lisp: the Reference assume some knowledge of Lisp. If you are a beginner, we suggest that you learn Lisp from one of the many standard texts available. One very good introductory text is Lisp by Patrick Winston and Berthold Horn (2nd Edition, 1984, Addison Wesley, Reading MA - be sure to use the second edi- tion)." Why do they recommend that you be sure to get the second edition, and not the third? Is it because CLOS won't work in Allegro on the NeXT? Or is just that CLOS does not come with the NeXT? The NeXT comes with lots of other goodies. Why not CLOS? Will CLUE or CLIM be supported when X11 is finally released for the NeXT? thanks, karl p.s., I am still waiting to hear about third party disks on the NeXT. This response is from David Margolies, the documentation manager at Franz Inc. and the person who wrote the above paragraph: Thank you for your comments. We recommended the second edition over the *first* (which did not describe Common Lisp). At the time the description was prepared, we were unaware of the existence of the third edition. It would have been better to say "2nd edition or later ... be sure not to get the first edition." Much of the functionality of CLOS is available in PCL which is included with Allegro CL on the NeXT. A complete version of CLOS is being developed and information on it will be announced closer to the release date. CLUE and CLIM require X11 which is not currently available. Information on the availability of X11 should come from NeXT directly. David Margolies Franz Inc.
