Date: Sun 22-Jul-1989 04:40:00 From: Unknown Subject: smart terminal dumb & AppleTalk? I'm having a strange problem that maybe someone can help with. (what NeXT problem isn't strange?) We used a Mac printer cable (null modem) to connect a Mac SE running a terminal emulator to one of the NeXT serial ports. We edited a line in /etc/ttys and logged in without much problem. But for some reason the TERM/TERMCAP variables were getting set to be a "dumb" terminal instead of "vt100" as specified in the /etc/ttys line. Even more perplexing is the fact that when I enter "w" or "who", users on a remote terminal don't even show up! So if the MegaPixel console is logged out and I log on via the serial port according to "who", nobody's logged on at all. P.S. I know that Ethernet is the big thing right now, but our end product calls for low-cost low-level-protocol networking. The NeXT has the right serial chip and connector (Z8530 SCC, mini-DIN8); has anyone heard of trying to get AppleTalk (at least link access protocol) on the NeXT?
