Date: Sun 15-Aug-1989 23:58:10 From: Unknown Subject: lpd problems/netinfo? I have no idea if netinfo has anything to do with this or not. Here's the problem (I'll get to netinfo below): I'm trying to set up printing from the NeXT to our non-NeXT machines. I have a printcap file with the remote printers listed. They are for the most part laserwriters, driven by transcript under 4.3bsd. I've made all the spool directories, and made them owner and group daemon. When I lpr a file from the NeXT to one of those printers, I get the error message jobs queued, but cannot start daemon. Concurrent with this I get a message in /usr/adm/messages that says nekst lpd[nnn]: unknown printer: ps1 (ps1 was the printer I sent the job to.) So I try to use lpc to abort and start that daemon. Once again, I get a complaint that the daemon can't be started, and a message in /usr/adm/messages that says ps1 is an unknown printer. lpq -Pps1 works fine. It shows no entries nekst.ucsd.edu: Sending to odin Rank Owner Job Files Total Size 1st root 3 /etc/motd 68 bytes Odin is the host machine for ps1. The lpq output is what I would expect, but it never gets past this point, and nothing prints. If I kill off the master lpd process (the one started at boot time) and restart lpd, the current job will print. But after that, I can't send any new jobs. The same symptoms as before pop up. Is this familiar to anyone? The reason I mentioned netinfo is because a comment in the original printcap file mentioned that it wasn't consulted if netinfo was running. Well, netinfo is not running right now. We can't get it to run without hanging much of the system. Is that the problem? Should our time be spent getting nibindd running? If so, I'll probably have to post another question. Thanks for any help. Glenn Little little%cs@ucsd.edu >From: layer@akbar.COM (Kevin Layer)
