Date: Sun 15-Aug-1989 16:36:46 From: Unknown Subject: landscape mode with ptroff.... Does anybody know how to make troff text print out in landscape? Normal troff doesn't know how to do that sort of thing, as it was indended for a C/A/T phototypesetter. The NeXT incarnation of troff (ptroff) looks like something they just grabbed from Adobe Systems. It is not supported at all by NeXT-written documentation. There are just a few manual pages from Adobe. I know that some versions of troff, such as Elan's Eroff, can do landscape. Can it be done on the NeXT without any major headaches? While we're on the subject of ptroff, does anybody know what to do with the fonts? The manual pages say that there should be assorted stuff in /usr/local/lib/ps, which there is not. The .fp directives do not work as expected (these two facts are probably related). The troff font width tables do not seem to exist anywhere. All the font stuff is in /NextLibrary/Fonts, and that stuff doesn't have a lot to do with the formats mentioned in the man pages. Does anyone know what is going on? Obviously, NeXT is trying to get away from the old-fashioned, kludgy, inflexible troff text-based system, and move over to the WriteNow system, which has advantages in many areas. Unfortunately, for compatibility with other UNIX systems that we use, it has to be troff. An explanation of fonts & other mysteriosities would be appreciated. | Dan Zerkle home:(805) 968-4683 morning:961-2434 afternoon:687-0110 | | dz@cornu.ucsb.edu dz%cornu@ucsbuxa.bitnet ...ucbvax!hub!cornu!dz | | Snailmail: 6681 Berkshire Terrace #5, Isla Vista, CA 93117 | | Disclaimer: If it's wrong or stupid, pretend I didn't do it. | >From: flynn@pixel.cps.msu.edu (Patrick J.
