What I'm thinking of is for the margin to the left of the directory to have a black bar which is proportionally sized to the amount of the directory visible. When you scroll the directory using the up/down arrows at the bottom, the black bar would move up/down. Perhaps this could be done by subclassing a scrollbar and making it really skinny.
