The problem seems to have been with the way I tarred the Next filesystem to the Sun. I recopied the Next filesystem using tar with the pB flags set. The Next boots and runs like the happy camper it is. uunet.uu.net. It works just fine. Sun does provide bootparam service and it works just fine.
