  Have there any responses to your question?  I have often thought
  that this would be an interesting project if it hasn't already
  been done.  Three years ago, for a graduate graphics course at
  the Univ. of North Carolina, we did a RenderMan implementation
  working from the Pixar specification for a class project (however,
  the code is in no condition to release without a lot of work).

  Would it be worthwhile to look into developing a YACC/BISON parser
  for the RenderMan interface as a front-end to one of the public
  domain raytracers?
