Friends,
Welcome to the RenderMan technical mailing list. This message is
to inform you that you have been added. The intent of the list is to
discuss technical issues involved with the generation of RenderMan and
QuickRenderman scenes.

Administrative requests such as additions, deletions, and heaven forbid,
mail problems should be send to rman-request@aero.org.

Submissions to the list should be sent to rman@aero.org.

Guidelines:
I will be moderating the list in an attempt to keep the
"signal-to-noise" ratio fairly high. Your assistance will make my job a
lot easier. Please try to follow the guidelines below, most of these are
simple netetiquette, but I'm including them below for the record.

	1) The list is intended for technical discussions. Please try to
research your questions before you submit them to the list. Provide as
many details as you can about the approaches you've tried.
	2) In most cases it is best if answers to questions are sent
directly to the author of the question. The author should then send a
message back to the list with a summary of the solution. It's best if
the author writes the summary instead of just concatenating together all
the answers he or she received.
	3) Limited commercial postings will be accepted as information
to the RenderMan community. I will include prices, but please try to
include more information than sale pitch. This is likely to be a
difficult line to define and the rules may change as the list matures.
	4) RenderMan source code is encouraged, but images are not. I
don't want to flood people's mailboxes with large files. If you have an
image you'd like to share, please make it available via ftp from your
site.
	5) Although many users are on NeXTs, not everyone is. Please do
not submit posting in NeXTMail format. Also, please try to keep
questions to the RenderMan (3Dkit is OK) aspects of the programming.

Other comments:

The list has well over 100 participants at the moment, and the
subscription rate doesn't seem to be decreasing.

I'm looking for a couple of alternate moderators for the list for when
I'm unavailable. If you are interested in helping out, please send mail
to the rman-request address.

I will be archiving the list, but I'm still working out the details of
how, when and where. More on that later.

A few people included questions for the list with their subscription
message. If you were one who did, please resend your question to the
list.
