NeXT ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. NeXT Announces OEM Agreement with Dolphin Server Technology

Dolphin to offer client-server systems for mission-critical
application development

London, 1st December 1992 - NeXT Computer Europe today announced a
strategic agreement with Dolphin Server Technology headquartered in
Oslo, Norway. Dolphin, one of Europe's leading specialised server
providers, will resell NeXT workstations worldwide to act as clients
to its own servers. In addition, the agreement covers co-operative
technical and marketing activities. This will take effect from 1st
January 1993, with Dolphin specifically targeting the public service
and banking & finance sectors.

Bernhard Woebker, NeXT's European president, commented: "We see
Dolphin as a great business partner for NeXT. The market Dolphin is
primarily addressing - government and banking - are those able to
take full advantage of our NeXTSTEP object-oriented environment to
develop mission critical business applications five to ten times
faster than ever before. These type of productivity increases have
been seen by our large customers in the financial services market,
where they have implemented projects based on NeXTSTEP."

Terje Knudsen, Dolphin's vice president of sales and marketing,
added: "We're excited to be working with NeXT as it opens up a very
interesting business opportunity for us. We see the future of
corporate computing with user-friendly platforms taking full
advantage of multimedia, global access to data, and fast development
of advanced, tailor-made client-server solutions - a market which we
expect to grow 50% a year for the next three years. NeXT fulfills
all these criteria, and NeXTSTEP combined with the Dolphin server
platform is a rock solid environment for such applications. We
already have a couple of large customers very interested in our NeXT
solution."

NeXT's new Database Kit, an object kit included with NeXTSTEP Release
3.0, allows even faster creation of client-server applications that
rely on intensive database usage on the server, and provides a
single, consistent interface to SQL databases from multiple vendors.

Dolphin will also license the source code for NetInfo, NeXT's network
administration software. NetInfo lets system administrators manage
users, machines, file systems and other network resources on UNIX
networks, and can be ported to any UNIX-based computer. Based on a
distributed, extendable database, NetInfo gives system administrators
a much more flexible and manageable access control scheme than with
other UNIX network administration tools.

Background information - NeXT's client-server strategy

Many organizations are moving to distributed client-server systems so
they can run compute-intensive applications on back-end servers, with
easy to use applications on desktop clients. NeXT has a simple yet
powerful approach to this increasingly important market concentrating
on becoming the ideal client. NeXT's object-oriented technology is
server-independent, allowing the company to forge relationships with
server companies such as Dolphin to provide complementary customer
solutions. This strategy ensures NeXT's client products work with
the industry's leading servers to deliver a range of effective
client-server systems to customers in NeXT's target markets.

Other server companies with which NeXT has agreements include Auspex
Systems, Data General, NCR/Teradata, Pyramid Technology and Solbourne
Computer.

NeXT Computer designs and markets the industry-acclaimed NeXTSTEP
object-oriented software environment, and designs, manufactures and
markets UNIX-based workstations that run NeXTSTEP. NeXTSTEP and NeXT
workstations are used by medium and large organisations to develop
and deploy mission-critical applications, using both custom and
shrink-wrapped software.

Background on Dolphin
Dolphin Server Technology AS, based in Oslo, Norway, was founded in
1989 from the R&D team at Norsk Data. The company offers
state-of-the-art solutions to leading organisations worldwide.
Although Dolphin's business is based mainly in Europe, more than a
third of its revenue comes from activities in Asia, Brazil and the
USA. Its servers are aimed primarily at commercial and
administrative markets with requirements well suited to client-server
solutions.

5. Announcing ScanTastic software for the NeXT platform

ScanTastic software for the NeXT platform, is an extendible scanner
control application that is available for a variety of image scanners
to be utilized by the NeXT family of workstations. Each version of
the software is customized to exploit the full capabilities of the
particular hardware it supports.

ScanTastic features global, non-destructive image-processing and
color-correction tools. This extendible set of functions include:
tone curves, brightness and contrast controls, sharpening and
blurring filters and a highly advanced saturation utility.

Since all corrections are non-destructive, each can be adjusted and
re-applied to the image without any loss of data. ScanTastic even
automatically suggests an appropriate resolution to match the given
requirements for output quality.

Any combination of these tools can be chained together, forming an
"edit list". The edit list can then be saved of in sets for future
use.

This feature offers many applications such as default settings for
individual scanners and "Proxy-processing" of images to name just
two. This means that you can scan in an image at a relatively low
resolution and make your edits in a high speed environment. Once you
are satisfied with your results, rescan the image at a high
resolution and let ScanTastic apply all your edits unattended! This
maximizes your time and the computing resources available.

ScanTastic utilizes an open architecture, allowing the product to be
extended with optional filter libraries and additional scanner
modules.

Using the NeXT Services menu, ScanTastic allows seamless links with
image editing software, OCR service and page layout programs.

ScanTastic software is available for the following scanners:

  Scanner Availability

craftman@xanthus.se

Aimed at both commercial and in-house corporate developers as well as
multimedia artists, CraftMan is a complete tool for building real
multimedia applications for the NeXT platform. For example, CraftMan
can be used to create impressive presentations and highly efficient
computer-based training applications, as well as to build graphical
interfaces to other applications. In addition, it is an ideal tool
for rapidly prototyping applications with real functionality.

"CraftMan has many things in common with tools like HyperCard for the
Apple Macintosh and Visual Basic for Windows," says Jesper Lundh,
marketing manager at Xanthus." Basically, it is object-oriented
program development for normal computer users. But CraftMan is also
carefully designed to grow with the user, so even proficient
C-programmers can develop programs in a fraction of the normal
development time using CraftMan."

CraftMan lets users design complete multimedia applications
including the user interface for the NeXT platform without having to
program in Objective-C. Instead, users write the necessary program
code in the built-in CraftScript language.

As a complete tool, CraftMan includes all the building blocks needed
for building multimedia applications:

- user interface design tools
- drawing tools
- multimedia object types like image, sound, animation and video
- a powerful and easy-to-use object-oriented scripting language

The user interface is designed by dragging objects from palettes,
importing graphics and sound from any other application and by
free-hand drawing.

The functionality of the program is defined simply by dragging
connectors between objects and by connecting CraftScript code
directly to interface objects like buttons, sliders and text-fields.

CraftMan takes full advantage of NeXT's multimedia capabilities,
including 32-bit color PostScript graphics with alpha channel for
portraying transparency; CD-quality stereo sound; on-screen video;
and animation. For example, partly transparent animation objects can
run "over" any other object, and graphics can be displayed "over"
live video.

The built-in scripting language CraftScript is a user-friendly, truly
object-oriented language that can be used even by non-programmers.
With CraftScript, users can build complete scripts by simply
selecting language components from a list. CraftMan is fully
integrated with the NeXTSTEP operating environment and can control
other NeXTSTEP applications and exchange data by sending CraftScript
messages to them.

CraftMan is also delivered with a run-time module that makes it
possible to freely distribute CraftMan programs. The run-time module
can run CraftMan programs but not edit them, making it easy for many
users to run the same CraftMan programs without having to purchase

10. HSD SHIPS INTERNATIONAL SPELL CHECKER FOR NEXTSTEP --
ANNOUNCES BUNDLING AGREEMENT WITH NeXT

MOUNTAIN VIEW, DEC 2, 1992 -- HSD Microcomputer U.S., Inc. today
announced that it has begun shipping an international spell
checker for NeXTSTEP that supports 11 languages.

Called HSD Spell, the software will be bundled for a limited
time with NeXT's European Starting Point Kits. It will also be
available from HSD and resellers. (Contact HSD for pricing.)
HSD Spell includes two language dictionaries-English and one other.
Additional languages can be purchased. Languages
currently supported include Danish, Dutch, English (U.K. and
U.S.), Finnish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese,
Spanish and Swedish.

HSD Spell is shipped on two extended density disks which contain
the HSD Spell application and all 11 language dictionaries. The
HSD Spell application contains a menu choice for installing
additional languages, which can be unlocked after purchasing an
activation code from HSD.

HSD President David Peter noted that HSD Spell is tightly
integrated into the NeXTSTEP 3.0 operating system so that users
can check spelling directly from the spelling panel built into
most NeXTSTEP applications. "Many applications utilize the
speller built into NeXTSTEP 3.0. HSD Spell automatically
incorporates installed languages into this panel so they can
be accessed directly," Peter said. In applications that do not
support the NeXTSTEP speller, text can be imported via the
"Services" menu into the HSD Spell application to check
spelling or perform a variety of common text editing functions.

Peter also noted that HSD, a leading developer of scanning,
OCR, image management and voice recognition products for NeXT,
is working on an entire suite of linguistics products for
NeXTSTEP, including thesauruses, proof readers and grammar
checkers.

HSD Microcomputer U.S., Inc. was founded in 1989 as an

ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENTS

13. National Grants Benefit Cal State L.A.

From: CSU State Line
The California State University
November 1992

This past August, Cal State L.A. professors Robert Desharnais
(biology) and Gary Novak (geology) received a $250,000 grant from the
National Science Foundation (NSF) for a project they feel will make
the natural sciences more appealing, exciting and comprehensible to
university students.

The project revolves around the university's new NeXT computer lab
that Desharnais and Novak, along with other CSLA faculty members,
established through NSF funding. Faculty involved in the project are
convinced that by introducing undergraduates to specially designed
courses using NeXT computersPa versatile environment of "pictures,
animation, videos, sounds, graphs, words and numbers where science
can be seen, heard and explored"Pthe myth of sciences as difficult
subjects can be dispelled, thus encouraging majors and stimulating
creativity.

The project's principal investigators believe that the NeXT, which
they describe as "highly visual, user friendly. . . powerful and
intuitive," can be a particularly useful tool for students whose
English proficiency is limited or who have received diverse, or even
poor, academic preparation. In addition, Desharnais and Novak view
the project as a means to increase retention and stimulate the
creativity of those students already majoring in math and science.

The CSLA professors see the benefits of the NeXT learning environment
as far-reaching. By "more fully engaging students in thinking an
problem solving," the NeXT-based courses encourage scientific
curiosity and "increase the scientific and technical literacy of
citizens" in general.

How will all this happen? At the outset, seven CSLA faculty from such
disciplines as biology, chemistry, geology, and physics are modifying
15 courses, including science orientation, quantitative analysis,
environmental geology, general physics, and introductory biology,
chemistry and astronomy classes. The project will involve about 100
science undergraduates, 100 education majors, and 150 general
education students annually. Students will have access to the
electronic classroom for class assignments, and CSLA faculty members
interested in the project will be encouraged to learn about the
application of electronic desktop techniques in their fields.

"Ours will be the first largescale intorduction of sophistocated
computer workstations into the first and second year science
curriculum," wrote Desharnais and Novak in their proposal. Stressing
the importance of the projects as a case study, the investigators
note that it will "lay the foundation for a regional center for
interactive multimedia in higher education." The project will be
evaluated by both external review and studies where student
performance is compared to that of students using traditional
methods.

14. Chemists and Mathematicians: Greetings from Allegheny College

Chemists and Mathematicians (topologists or knot theorists) may find
3DReality a nice tool for displaying simple molecules or surfaces,
knots and links. I have generated several examples of molecules and
surfaces and placed them on pellns.alleg.edu in /pub/3.0/3DPics.
There are four files for each image. For example, for the image of a
genus 3 surface, you will find genus3T.tiff (transparent background),
genus3W.tiff (white opaque background), genus3.rib (the rib code) and
genus3.3DReality (3DReality format). All images are 24 bit color.

Also, the latest version of my server-client mini-example is
available (see article below). The latest version has an new object
for finding the user's real name (error checking done with NeXT's
exception handling), an improved interface to the server for
displaying the participating clients, and a way for clients to "raise
their hands" in a classroom setting.

Regards,
Chuck

15. Distributed Objects Mini-Example from Allegheny College

I've written a mini-example (a server and a client) that illustrates
the use of Distributed Objects. Basically the server application can
send images to its clients and select which client should be active.
The active client can control a pointing marker with its mouse and
move it around in an image that it has received from the server. The
server and other clients will see the same moving pointer in the same
image on their screens.

Lots of nifty features remain to be added, but I thought I would make
this version available while it is still small and hopefully easy to
follow.

At Allegheny we suspect that this type of application might replace
the need for an overhead projection unit at least in our NeXT labs.
At the very least applications like this will stimulate classroom
discussions.

In addition to illustrating how to write a distributed objects
application, other features of interest in this mini-example are -

1) How to drag a file from the WorkspaceManager into a view. This is
how images to be sent to clients are selected by the server. Just
drag a file from the File Viewer into the preview window.

2) How to use the NetInfoKit to get the real name of a user. When a
client gets added to the servers list, we want to know the real
   name of the user.

3) How to use an NXData object. We have to send the NXBitmapImageRep
data to our clients. This is done most easily with an NXData
   object.

The complete source code can be obtained via anonymous ftp from
pellns.alleg.edu. Look for Server.tar.Z and Client.tar.Z in
/pub/3.0/Source/Multidisciplinary. There is also a diagram
illustrating how the objects in these applications talk to each
other.

I hope you find this useful.
Regards,
Chuck

"NeXTSTEP 3.0 crosses multiple platforms"
Includes seamless network integration, file sharing, and full development environment

By Lee Sherman

"NeXTSTEP's Interface Builder and its supporting utilities and
Objective C compiler provide the easiest-to-use, most powerful
programming environment we have seen to date...Object orientation has
been extended in Release 3 to include distributed objects... New kits
in Release 3 provide developers with additional objects that extend
the system's capabilities in the areas of communication,
connectivity, and graphics... NeXTSTEP has always been a programmer's
playground. Now it's even better"

"No other operating system vendor provides as extensive a collection
of bundled applications, electronic mail, fax support, system
administration, demo applications, and development tools. Much of
what NeXT includes as standard costs a lot extra on other systems.
NeXTSTEP, Release 3 is a very good value."

The following are excerpts from a positive article on Steve Jobs and
NeXT's strategies in hardware and software:

"The brightest spot in Next's product line is not a computer -
although NeXT's sleek black machines are among the most powerful in
the $5,000-to-$15,000 workstation class. Instead, Next is betting its
future on the software it developed for those machines, NeXTSTEP, an
operating system whose "object-oriented" architecture allows
corporate customers touse programming building blocks to design
sophisticated customized computer applications "custom apps," in
Jobs-speak-in a fraction of the time they could do it on other
systems....

19. First NeXT newspaper makes debut with NeXTSTEP486

AUSTIN, Texas - The first monthly newspaper devoted to
the NeXT marketplace will make its debut in March, as
PCI delivers NeXTReview to thousands of NeXTStation and
NeXTStep customers.

The publication presents itself as the first newspaper
for the entire NeXTStep marketplace, including NeXT's
booming commercial market and new NeXTSTEP486
customers. PCI vice president Tom Clark said the
exploding NeXT marketplace demands timely news coverage
of its news, products and object-oriented advantages.

"We believe that the NeXT community is ready for a
monthly news source to chronicle the success of NeXT in
the marketplace," Clark said, "and follow NeXTSTEP's
object-oriented technology as it becomes the defacto
industry standard. That is the mission for NeXTReview."

NeXTReview readers come from the NeXT customer
database. Top executives at NeXT said the newspaper is a
new and important information source for NeXTStep users.

"NeXTReview promises to be an important news and
information journal covering NeXTStep, object technology
and its role in corporate information systems," said
NeXT president Peter Van Cuylenberg. "We at NeXT are
delighted to welcome PCI's NeXTReview as a major new
independent publication dedicated to NeXTSTEP
technology."

The newspaper is an independent publication of PCI, a
privately owned publisher which has specialized in
vendor-specific computer newspapers for more than 13
years. NeXTReview will tap the news resources of an
organization that already produces Sun, HP, IBM and
Silicon Graphics workstation newspapers every month. PCI
publications, grounded in the experience of corporate
computing professionals, are mailed to more than 200,000
such customers worldwide.

NeXTReview will expand the NeXT market's coverage from
the customer perspective. Customer advice and news every
month is integral to NeXTReview, not extra. A
Productivity Toolbox will feature product perspectives
for both developers and users. Customers will report on
how NeXT improved productivity at their firms. Product
needs will be examined from NeXT target market
viewpoints, rather than a generalized want list.

Integration Review reports on NeXT's progress in the
business world. Networking advice, articles from
developers in the NeXTStep customer base and a special
server department provide information to get NeXTSTEP
working with other systems.

Object technology forms the technical heart of
NeXTReview . Object Watch will track the progress of
standards and other vendors' object announcements,
because no system is an island in today's computer
sites. Regular departments will cover Objective C,
object-based designing and database skills for
object-oriented work. An ObjectMarket roundup offers a
resource for firms buying or retooling objects.

PCI's unique Observation Stations will provide a
real-world evaluation track for products. The stations
are working customer sites, staffed by computing
professionals who work with products every day, not in a
lab simulating a business.

New product releases, application news stories or
candidate materials for integration profiles should be
submitted to

	Ron Seybold
	Executive Editor
	12416 Hymeadow Dr.
	Austin, TX 78750
	e-mailed to next@pcinews.lonestar.org
	or faxed to 512-331-3900.

Immediate needs are for columnists with Objective C and
object-oriented design experience, as well as
first-person accounts of NeXT integration. Editorial
deadline for the first issue is Feb. 16 for an issue
with a March 16 street date.

Advertising information and media kits, as well as a
special pilot issue, are available by contacting PCI by
phone at 512-250-9023. Ask for Dottie Lentz.
